Talking Horses Royal Ascot Day one 15/06/21

This is the first post in a trial that’s intended to give a daily voice to racing fans. Such fans have lost a platform they inhabited on The Guardian website for many years – Talking Horses, which used to be daily but is now ‘guaranteed’ only twice a week.

Using the comments section below this post feel free to say what you want, so long as it is decent and inoffensive (a subjective term, but we will see how it goes). I’ve removed the requirement to identify yourself before posting, but please say who you are when signing off your post. A pen name is fine.

For the first few weeks comments from new visitors will be pre-moderated, so unless you have commented here in the past, your comment will not appear immediately after you have posted it. I’ll look in regularly to approve comments so that they are published as soon as possible. Once you have had a comment published, no more of your comments will need moderation; they should appear as soon as you submit them.

All the best.
Joe

  1. Morning all. Hope everyone is well.

I’d be interested to know people’s thoughts on Bhattash. I am no racing officianado but he has been a lovely and exciting horse to watch.

Obviously he’s another year older (but probably not deeper in debt) but he goes well fresh and it must be some time since he’s been around 2/1.

Is he too good not to back or there are too many question marks and the bright young thing that is Winter Power will be able to step up and beat a Bhattash that is on the way down ?

      1. I think I’ll have a few quid on Battash. He is deserving of a bit of loyalty. Maybe Que Amoro as a little e/w nibble.

  2. Great Joe, thanks for starting up the forum.
Ascot day 1 and luckily I am off work. A nice afternoon to tune in and watch some top races.
Bets so far are on La Barrossa EW – who think will favour the quicker ground and is already a course winner.
Felix in the 5.35 ran a nice race in Meydan behind Lord North.

Palace pier looks to be an exceptional animal. But betting odds on is not much my bag. Sir busker without the Fav for me.

The staying races – ascot stake and cooper stake seem to be dominated by Mullins horses. In The ascot stakes neither has much form to gauge but moore is on MC Muldoon. I think it will be a watching brief for me. I bet trumpet man at Chester and he did ok. May go back in with a small EW on skybet.

Hope all of you have a great day watching if you can. Good luck

  3. Very disappointing to see that Lucky Vega will be retired after the St James Palace Stakes and sent to stud in Australia. Only run seven or eight times. Yes, been good against his own age group, but that’s it. Not proven against his elders, nor against late maturing contemporaries. What a racket the breeding industry has become….

  4. Thanks Joe, hopefully the annoying youngsters who joined in elsewhere will stay away. I’m trusting Battleground to come good today. Happy Ascot everyone.

  6. Have gone all EW today: Sir Busker (outclassed but always runs well in big fields/Ascot), Ebro River, impressive last time and have just been reading about the battle of the Ebro River (didn’t promise any logic),Winter Power (have actually backed to win, but hard to keep out of frame, especially if Battash has off day – not unknown). Chindit, always fancied this to improve on a non-undulating track, got 9/1 last night, someone somewhere agrees with me, Postileo, it’s a decent price for a horse that has shown promise in staying trips, Blue Cup, hard not to be impressed last time, could still be improving, Throne hall, always looked like it had a decent handicap in it. Over a million to one for the acca (I’ll settle for the place part). Don’t take any of above too seriously and enjoy the day.

  7. Many thanks for doing this.Long term Guardian reader and was incredibly disappointed to see them jettison Chris Cook and pare back the racing coverage.Lets hope this communty takes off and thrives.
Great to see Ascot underway as it means there’s only 4 months to go before Chepstow’s national hunt neeting.

  8. Well fancied by both Greg and Hugh Taylor there so not a terrible price at 11s or so for Berkshire Shadow. Shame the Queen didnt make it , understandable tho.

  9. Hopefully see a huge price outsider win the Ascot Stakes in the shape of Island Brave.Sky paying 7 places.Think this horse will relish this step up in trip and can see him passing a few of these in the last furlong to get the ew money at least.

  10. Thanks for this Joe. I’m on holiday in Scotland but had small punts today on Lord Glitters w/o Palace Pier EW, and singles on Bataash and Lucky Vega, and EW double, so most of my money back with enhanced places. Hello everyone!

Hopefully, this could become a thriving forum as the horse racing fans really need a good one as soon as possible.
