This is to allow those interested in a syndicate horse to discuss it away from the main Talking Horses threads.
Comments are infinite, so hopefully there’ll be no problems, although you might have to scroll to find the thread if it has not been active for a few days.
Here’s an update – September 11 2021
t’s been a while, however, here’s an update on the Talking Horses Syndicate.
NORTHERN SYMPHONIE remains out to grass at the stud. They have done a great job with her and she is growing and developing nicely. She will go to be broken in towards the end of October.
Thanks to the sterling work of Dilton, our new lease horse AUSSIE MOON is scheduled to run in a NH bumper in about 4 weeks time. Syndicate members have selected the racing colours – orange and dark blue diablo, orange sleeves and a orange and dark blue quartered cap. Let’s hope she flies like the devil.
The syndicate is full and I would like to thank all members for their support and I look forward to meeting you, when you are able, to come racing.
In good time a new horse will be sourced for the syndicate and, ideally, French bred and based in France. While Dilton is working on this, it will not happen until the Spring of 2022 and syndicate members will be kept informed.
New members are most welcome to join the syndicate as we continue to develop and should you be interested please email me so that I can register your interest:-

Well done DN (formerly b) and Dilton for your great work. I’m fine with the cancer research link. I’d imagine if we could get one for around the £5k mark, I and a few others might stretch for the 5% instead of 2.5% instead, which will soon make this a reality.

Thanks Rob and all the other comments over the weekend. An update will follow soon,

Obviously no problem with the cancer charity idea. Thanks for coming up with it.

I definitely do not want any return on my investment in the highly unlikely chance of a net return
As someone who has sat on Medical Research Committees for many years I have found the Pharmacological medical bullet funding has too much weight against the funding of holistic Psychosocial support.
My area is Dementia and I always wanted to see basic practical research in how to support rather than cure getting funded and I have acquaintances who work in Oncology who tell me the same.
It needs to be a tailored research charity.
Research in how to live with and not cure Dementia is my interest and my Oncology acquaintances tell me that is also their biggest deficit.
People who work with Dementia are jealous of the disproportionately of funding in Cancer research compared to Dementia. They have not produced a great return on that yield and we feel we could have used that money more productively.
I think it needs to be a tailored Cance Support Service rather than money that disappears in to the endless ether of magic bullet cure.

I never met anyone from Macmillan when I worked in the NHS who I didn’t learn from about compassionate care but I am really open to any Charity.
The person who might have thought of the appropriate Charity is Dilton as he is going through something that I am not and is in a better position to identify Research priorities.

Thanks EGS Dilton will make the call where the cancer donation goes.

Good morning EGS,thanks for this . My thoughts on the charity who will benefit are open.
The treatment my wife received at Oxfords Churchill hospital was superb as is her ongoing 3 weekly one from Swindon. The latter is provided now by a 30 minute injection rather than the 4 hour drip method and this has made a huge difference .Research is ongoing to provide it in tablet form which will make things even easier for women to live normal lives longer with breast cancer.
DNB has the dubious honour of running the syndicate which is tricky enough as it is and I do not want to make it harder for him or dictate to the members.
I fully understand what you have said and its given me food for thought ,thanks.

Many thanks. It is definitely best overall if you decide. I am not caring for anyone who is sick and you kindly shared your experience with those on the Guardian Forum.
I always thought the word “Journey” to be patronising but I am afraid there is no better word to describe Cancer or Dementia Journies with Tracks changing, Times changing, Signals not working etc.
You have an emotional investment in choosing the Charity which I don’t have.

From Dirty Northerner:
I will again start with an update of the current syndicate outline commitments. I am pleased to say that some more of you have stated that they may commit further once they know what is the extent of the initial financial involvement.
David – 2.5%
Luke H – 2.5%
Comartun – 2.5%
EGS – 2.5%
Aurorian – 5%
Jamie – 10%
Rob J – 2.5%
Betlikemen – 5%
Gourin56 – 2.5%
Savoieblue – 2.5%
Jakebuckfast – 2.5%
Arkle66 – 2.5%
TheSteelman – 2.5%
Paulbad – 5%
Dilton – 10%
DirtyNortherner – 10%
Total – 70% or £8,400 towards the purchase/lease-purchase.
Dilton has found what he has told me is a very nice well grown Bay yearling filly by a Group winning stallion out of a winner producing mare who won herself. She’s not been named.
The yearling filly is a half sister to 4 winners and her dam is a half sister to many black type winners (one of whom is a top sire in France) on the flat and over hurdles.
The filly is home bred and reared properly on a stud farm that he knows well and trusts.
At his request I’ve arranged for her to be vetted on Friday and I am meeting Dilton on Monday at the stud to hopefully complete the purchase.
We believe we can get her for around £4,500, including VAT and the cost of a vet’s inspection that’s taking place on Friday.
If we buy the filly she will remain at the stud until the end of October, at a cost of £250 per month for feeding and looking after, before going to be broken in.
In time I will adjust the percentage shares and training fees for the horse accordingly.
While this is positive news and while progress with the BHA, ROA, Weatherby’s and insurance companies to establish the syndicate is taking place, there remains the possibility that we do not buy her should the vet fails her in any way .

Thanks for all the positive comments to date. Can we all agree that the off hind leg will belong to EGS 😉

I am happy with that.
Painting on a star on its Forehead will lead to identification problems with the Stewards if it is a wet day even with an emulsion.
Also the Forehead should belong to someone with at least a 5% stake.

Very late to the party here—been off the internet for much of the summer. Do I understand correctly that the estimated costs of a 2.5% share would be £300ish initial outlay and £45ish monthly costs? If so, put me in for 2.5%, please.

I wish to join you, so add me to the list, for a basic share now, but my commitment will be longer term also. Thanks to you all for getting this started, it’s going to be fun to be in with such a great bunch.

Welcome on board Cornsay, Cerises and I see your additional 5% Betlikemen. We are now at 77.5%, well done!
Initial percentages stated are confirmed. Initial financial outlay will be reduced based on the cost of the horse, vetting etc.
Email correspondence, direct to members, on syndicate agreement document and financial matters will follow in due course. .

I’d like to echo the words of others on here, by thanking the sterling work of all those working hard to get the syndicate together. With the lower price of the prospective horse, I’d be happy to increase my share if needed.
The charity suggestion is fine with me – happy with Cancer Research, though preference would be Macmillan, but will go with whatever chosen..
Great to see this getting closer to a reality!

Hi all. Have found you via the TH thread yesterday.
I’d like to have a little nibble at this if theres still room.
However I have a few things going on work wise at the moment which may materially affect family finances so cant really commit for a month or two. I dont want to muck any one around so if theres a chance to buy in sometime in Q4 great – if not no worries – I’ll follow from the outside.
Cheers all

Here is the syndicate’s email address. Please send my a reply with your name and address, as the forms will require signature.

Well lads. I have been at the coal face today setting up the syndicate, aided by the sage we all know as Dilton. It’s like setting up a small business (which I have done a few times) and I’m getting there. All I ask for is your patience and understanding. I will be totally transparent, but the odd mistake will happen.
However, it will be a doddle when the second horse comes around.
To date the following have contacted me by email:-
David, EGS, Savoieblue, The Steelman, Cornsay, Aurorian, Jamie, Cerises and PaulBad. Obviously, Dilton and myself are committed.
However will Comartun, RobJ, Betlikemen, Gourin 56, Jakebuckfast and Arkle66 email me over the weekend, so I can get the wheels in motion.
Following complete email registration Syndicate business will go private. However, regular updates will be posted to all members of Talking Horses blog on the Syndicate Thread.
Well done all concerned, Syndicate members and Talking Horses members, and particularly Joe for hosting this.
We have come quite a way in a very short time.

Every cloud and all that. The loss of Chris Cook and the steady demise of TH in the Guardian wasn’t a great thing but its led to this fine Blog and the Actualization of a Syndicate which had been much mooted but never seemed to sprout wings.
