Dirty Northerner hit the Hitlist yesterday with a French double: nap Asad Zabeel went in at 5/2 and Ancient Rome at an advised 15/8. Alan’s EW nap Bondi Girl was 3rd at 9/1. Fine work gents, on a tough day’s racing.
If I’ve missed anyone, please give me a shout via the August Winners thread.
The blog’s nap got out-jockeyed – hemmed in at a crucial time for a strong-finishing second. Today’s nap is the in and out End Zone, who was out last time and I’m hoping will be ‘in’ today. He’s a 16/1 shot in the 4.00 Beverley.
As ever, please leave your naps/tips by making a comment below. All welcome, especially newcomers; just enter a name when asked so we know who is who. No prizes, but it’s good fun here among some seasoned punters, most of whom spent years commenting at the Guardian on the original Talking Horses forum, which has now been heavily cut back.
If you tip a winner, please use the Winners thread to highlight your result and we’ll put you on the Hitlist next day. There is a Winners thread for each month.
We also have a Lounge thread for general chat, though as a forum we are a bit limited to what WordPress, our host here, provides as far as structure goes.
Thanks for looking in. Good luck with your bets today, but please bear in mind that this is meant to be ‘fun’. There are many wise heads posting tips here and we haven’t yet gone a day without somebody tipping a winner. But never bet more than you can afford to lose. Small stakes can still produce wide smiles.
All the best
Joe
Goodness, I seem to be frustrated. After a lovely day with family in deepest Englandshire I’ve had time to pick BAIKAL in the 2.50 at Beverley.

Auldchief, hoped you golfed in South Bucks yesterday. I grew up there and rarely ventured into North Bucks. Strange people up there.

That’s a fabulous ew nap Robicheaux! Saved my (vegetarian) bacon (though it’s unobtainable in France) (and probably banned).
Nebo was a Babylonian god of wisdom and agriculture and patron of scribes and schools. Hence the use of the name for a software appilcation for taking notes.

Following yesterday’s French connection, I again cast my eyes of the disgrace of the U.K. racing calendar. We have a sport run for the bookies and, unlike the French and the Irish equivalents, that are run for the industry. Incidentally, , the reason why French racing commenced earlier during COVID is because it is part of the agricultural industry of the country.
Stakeholders, not shareholders!
However, DN loves a punt, particularly when it can distract him from the administrative complexities of the BHA, Weatherby’s and the ROA.
The nap is the Young Master’s EMPHATIC ANSWER, 5/1, Gowran 5.35. Win bets and a double with Geordie’s ex- trainers YANIFER, 100/30, Ffos Las at 8.15.
Then I cannot miss out on a speculative double, probably based on me reading the form with hope and not calculation.
SWEET MOLLY MALONE in the same Gowran 5.35 at 11/1 from O’Brien pere (see French racing grows on you!) and LILAC ROAD 9/1, 4.15 Salisbury. Win bets and a saver EW double.

Punters at Ffos Las tonight, where the ground is currently stated to be Good (Good to Firm in places), should expect to wear the full rain gear as it is sheeting down here in Pembrokeshire this morning and is expected to continue in true Welsh Wales fashion until dark. Yanifer has won on g/s and may well do so again off a mark that still has some wriggle room, especially with the excellent Saffie doing the steering.

Morning report: ‘Going: Good, good to firm in places (GoingStick 8.5 at 7.20am). Will water if necessary to maintain good to firm.’
And then further down the page: ‘Weather: Cloudy with outbreaks of rain, possibly heavy at times.’
The first race at 5.15 was officially Good, good to firm in places. Then miraculously by race 2 it had changed to Godd, good to soft in places (after the torrential rain for ten hours). If you wonder why a horse in the first that needed top of the ground ran below form, there’s your answer. The truth is the COC couldn’t be arsed to change the description until it had become a statement of the bleeding obvious. If you have brought a horse all the way from Newmarket for quick ground (e.g. Kevin Philippart De Foy, who has the odds-on fav in the 7.15, which ran a bad race on heavy last time) you would be a trifle peed off tonight.

NAP is Ariel in the 3.40 now about 15/8.
Not a huge price but watch back it’s last race. On ground too soft it ran a great race to finish a very close 2nd. It lost against Isla Kai who went in to win again. Gets good ground tomorrow and should run a big race.
NB is Vesela in the 4.15 Salisbury at 12-1 EW
Ran some nice races but still have green. Got trapped last time but has form with some of these and could
Be progressing.

I didn’t nap anything for the least 2 days as I was afraid people might laugh at me.
Now I have lost that fear I will look at place doubles on 3 Ballydoyle Horses at Gowran who are Sweet Molly Malone, Woodland Garden and National Ballet.
I can’t find that bet right now and may have to do e.w. doubles closer to the off.
I am surprised that no Journal seems to have commented on this but I can never remember a Ballydoyle combo finishing last and 2nd last in a G1 like they did in the Phoenix Stakes on Sunday. Ballydoyle fielded 2 Horses who couldn’t finish ahead of anything in an IRISH 2 YEAR OLD G1.
This will only reinforce APOB’s fear of even numbers. He won’t make that mistake again.
