Talking Horses Friday August 20th 2021

If I’ve counted right, David yesterday landed his 3rd winning nap in a row by way of Presentandcounting winning at 11/8. I’ve mentioned before that when one of our tipsters hits form he or she is well worth following. Brilliant work, David.

It’s good to see Mickle back on the Hitlist with 3/1 winner Ever Given; stay with us, Mickle.

Robicheaux is rarely far away and after a god priced placed horse on Wednesday, put up Windsor winner Via Serendipity at an advised 9/1. Fine work.

Finally, Alan’s EW nap Escobar finished 5th at 12/1 (most bookies were paying at least 5 places). Well done, Alan.

If I’ve missed anyone, please give me a shout via the August Winners thread.

The blog’s nap Cliffs Of Capri disappointed. I will hold until just before racing before posting today’s nap.

As ever, please leave your naps/tips by making a comment below. All welcome, especially newcomers; just enter a name when asked so we know who is who. No prizes, but it’s good fun here among some seasoned punters, most of whom spent years commenting at the Guardian on the original Talking Horses forum, which has now been heavily cut back.

If you tip a winner, please use the Winners thread to highlight your result and we’ll put you on the Hitlist next day. There is a Winners thread for each month.

We also have a Lounge thread for general chat, though as a forum we are a bit limited to what WordPress, our host here, provides as far as structure goes.

Thanks for looking in. Good luck with your bets today, but please bear in mind that this is meant to be ‘fun’. There are many wise heads posting tips here and we haven’t yet gone a day without somebody tipping a winner. But never bet more than you can afford to lose. Small stakes can still produce wide smiles.

All the best

    1. CORMIER a non-runner, but entered for Sunday. So, I’ll add my other interests – WINK OF AN EYE, FEARBY & GOLDEN PAL – win bets and win multiples.

  1. Well done Alan with Escobar down to 5 places.
I had him down to 4 places along with multiples with the other Escobarrs on Saturday in the Ebor so that bet is in limbo.
Massive Aftertiming; the good news was my old friends Horoscope and Howth won at Killarney and I did Albuflara e.w. in the Yorkshire Oaks contrary to my documented opinion that nobody can tell which no-hoper might get placed in that race. She is a Grey. When do we ever learn to always start from that vantage point and take it from there?
    Now the bad news.
I had a really serious coupon that depended on Barbados winning the 20.15 in the last at Killarney but fell by a neck.
The real but ironic damage to my coupon was done by that Grey in the Yorkshire Oaks
She sneakily beat La Joconde who did her best to try to hold on to 2nd place. Yep. I had La Joconde at 150/1 place only who got run out of 2nd position by that very wicked Grey Witch.

    I can’t stand Sprint Races.
I keep a couple of Chickens and I prefer to see them racing for tit bits than the stalls opening up for the Nunthorpe.
3rd time lucky. I barely know who Golden Pal is but I sometimes glance at Guardian Horse Racing coverage and Greg Wood aped my words.

      1. I’m same with sprints – nine times out of ten I fancy you could run them again next day and get a totally different result. Yet I know people who don’t like Jumps as it “Takes too long”…Really????. Horses for courses i guess…

  2. So day 3 at York…NAP: FeArBy (5/1) in the Gimcrack (3.00) to swoop like a Thunderbird and take the spoils. You don’t have to be Brains to realise he got beaten by a potential Gp1-er last time out (Armor runs in France at the weekend so a pre-Nap, ahem, is advised for him) and doesn’t have the penalty his superiors in the market carry. NB: SUESA (Patrick to her friends) in the Nun. (3.35). Patrick, as absolutely nobody should call her, is going to ghost into contention behind a likely furious pace and then with just the right amount of dirty dancing swoop on the leaders like a fox upon one of elgran’s chickens, one of whom I hope is called Golden Pal incidentally. Will also be backing Strad to play one last winning tune in the of luck, y’all.

  3. Berkshire Shadow in the 3.00 at York. Other festival picks are:Wink of an Eye, Stradivarius, Dragon Symbol, Broadspear, Umneyaat and Royal fleet

  4. Just discovered this page so am a newbie here. I’ve been posting my profitable “RockTips” on Facebook for over 10 years so I might as well share the best ones here (when i remember!). Picked up over £2,100 for a £28 Placepot at York on Wednesday, and very nearly did it again yesterday – failing on leg 6, not helped by Abstinence refusing to go in stalls when I was hopping to cheer him home for another big win!!

    Anyway…Friday’s best bets
Nap – 1.50 STATE OF BLISS 17/2 EW 6 places at Sky
Next Best – 3.35 WINTER POWER 6/1 EW 5 places at Skybet
    Longshot – 5.10 DEVILWALA 40/1 6 places sKYBET
    Each Way Lucky 31 Skybet
1.50 STATE OF BLISS 17/1 6 places (was Winter Reprise 16/1 but just taken out as typing!)
    3.00 GIS A SUB 12/1 3 places
    3.35 EMRAATY ANA 33/1 5 places
    4.40 AUNTY BRIDY 22/1 4 places
    5.10 DEVILWALA 40/1 6 places

    1. Welcome Paul! That’s a cracking week you have had so far!
Great to see someone hitting a big win from a small stake !

I think you were very unlucky with Abstinace. I seen a lot of people fancy that one.

Good to have you on board. Hope your luck continues.

      1. Thanks mate.

Only went and won Placepot again today! Sadly no £2200 divi this time…£120 better than a poke in the eye though!

Three big price places in the Lucky 31 as well. Pity State of Bliss blew out. And an even bigger pity Sky don’t do BOG on extra place races anymore. Aunty Bridy put in at 22/1 went off 50s! 🙄

    2. Welcome, Paul. I saw that bet of yours on twitter. Fair old difference made by the Tote adding 10%. Something the rest of us should consider taking advantage of. Because they do the same with a few individual races, I believe.

  5. I’m having a torrid week of bets so best to stay clear of me!
The ground looks to be quicker on day three. I’ve not seen many in handicaps or sprints come from the back. Seem to Need to be firmly on the pace of your getting left behind.

In the Gimcrack my NB runs …. Orazio at 8-1 is a colt out of Carravagio and an Oasis dream mare. Will like the quick ground. Buick on board and here’s hoping for a winner. Skybet offer money back to 4th.

Surely Tim easterby has only had the Nunthorpe in mid all season for Winter power. The ground is quick and she is quick ! 5 places 6-1 EW

I think the last race at York is a really good one. Some really progressive types In There, some who will maybe be group class.
Royal fleet could be group class but gets the hood today to help settle. Il wait till before the off as York could boil him over given the crowds etc.

NAP today is this ones for Fred at 11/4 In the 5.05 musselburgh. Gets the cheek pieces and a very weak race.

Good luck folks, god knows I need it !

  6. Mentions in Dispatches are nice but probably set me up forthe inevitable fall. I’ve kept away from York where id be very much on cold list and continue to do so. A fairly timid nap of Albahr in the Sallisbury 6.53 with a mention of the popular round here Grant Tuers Lion Tower in the 4.00 at Musselburgh.

    Luck all as ever

  7. My Nap is Berkshire Shadow 3.00, but Mickle has already picked it (already mentioned too is 1.50 State of Bliss EW).
I was going to put my selection with Suesa, but I’ve jumped ship to Golden Pal, who I think will be happier on the firmer ground and Suesa may not put up another performance like Goodwood back-to-back. In a race that should have a scorching pace, I’ve also picked the spicy Chipotle (but now much shorter than the 25s I got).

    1. Tough choice with Suesa and Golden Pal. Former perhaps ground dependent, latter running for the first time so far from home, though I know the trainer likes to give them plenty time to recover from the journey and acclimatise. Good luck.

  8. Was drawn to Comier in the first at York but now an NR.. after years of Service in the RN I now feel obliged to put forward HMS President as my EW nap in the 13:50 York. 15/2… Would be amiss not to put it in an EW double with Royal Fleet in the last. Good luck today.

  9. I feel a but of a fraud here after my woeful attempts to pick a winner (though did have a little on the first winner yesterday). Today the one to avoid, since it’s my nap, is Spanish Mission.

  10. Spanish Mission (2.25) was dropped right out last time to track Stradivarius, the plan being to beat that one, which he did. The trouble is they all forgot about Subjectivist up front. He ought to get a better ride today and is the nap at around 11/4. Good luck.

  11. Well done to yesterday’s winning tipsters, not an easy day!.

Today’s NAP is KING TRITON, 5.10 York, 17/2 as I scrawl….first run for Grant Tuer, Hayley Turner in the saddle….
Good luck with tips and bets…

    1. Today I post an NB…PRESENTING BONNIE, EW 5.45 Kilbeggan , 18/1 or so…. Bryan Cooper… last 2 runs not great but won twice here earlier in the (Irish) “summer”! I like Bryan Cooper as a jockey, seems to have had a tough time of it the last few years. Would love to see him back at the top…

  12. After yesterdays’ nap Abstinence abstained from running yesterday my nap today is closer to home.

UNO TIGER is the nap is the 20:40 at Gulfstream Park

  13. No joy with my bets last couple of days, but what a race Stradivarius and Spanish Mission put on – no need to have had a bet in the race to enjoy two stayers going head to head like that 😀

  14. Had a quid ew in Flying ginger who had the easy lead and was always going to try make all.
If you have been held up at all this week you have been in trouble. Especially as the ground has quickened.

    Divewalla 50-1
    Isla Kai 22-1
    King Triton 7-1

In the 5.10 all look to be up with the pace. Chancing my arm with them EW. And a tiny forecast combo
