Talking Horses Tuesday August 24th 2021

David landed his nap Captain Cobjady winning at 9/5, and was joined on the Hitlist by Rakib who napped Porterinthejungle, returned at 3/1 BOG. Well done, David and Rakib.

If I’ve missed anyone, please give me a shout via the August Winners thread.

The blog’s nap was second (things are looking up!). The nap today is Brasca at 3/1 in the 6.35

As ever, please leave your naps/tips by making a comment below. All welcome, especially newcomers; just enter a name when asked so we know who is who. No prizes, but it’s good fun here among some seasoned punters, most of whom spent years commenting at the Guardian on the original Talking Horses forum, which has now been heavily cut back.

If you tip a winner, please use the Winners thread to highlight your result and we’ll put you on the Hitlist next day. There is a Winners thread for each month.

We also have a Lounge thread for general chat, though as a forum we are a bit limited to what WordPress, our host here, provides as far as structure goes.

Thanks for looking in. Good luck with your bets today, but please bear in mind that this is meant to be ‘fun’. There are many wise heads posting tips here and we haven’t yet gone a day without somebody tipping a winner. But never bet more than you can afford to lose. Small stakes can still produce wide smiles.

All the best
Joe

  1. TROLL PENINSULA 7/4 Newbury 5.45 is the nap and backed in a multiple with SENSE OF DUTY 8/13 Newbury 4.40 and BEOWULF 2/1 Newbury 7.15.

  2. I don’t back the Danzig Stallion line.
Declaration of War is not a Stallion of interest to me or anyone but JP Murtagh is no fool and clearly thinks highly of Chicago Soldier.
After a narrow defeat on his debut his Trainer took on Point Lonsdale in a G3 and did not disgrace himself and then ran close last time out.
This is not a Horse that should be trading around 11/8 in a 2 yo Bellewstown maiden.
No rain forecast so the ground may get firmer.
He is my nap in the 16.20.

  3. It’s the dam line that counts ,and nowadays the marketing. It’s a numbers game really. If you put the studs teaser on the top class mares booked into a stallion due to cover 150 you would get winners. Very few Stallions improve the line.

    1. I heard ruby Walsh say something similar a few years ago. He said something about people paying too much attention to the stallion, when stamina is always dictated by the dam.

    2. always reckon far too much made of the stallion vis a vis the mare. As you say, the top performing stallions tend to get the best mares anyway so by the law of averages they will get higher class winners. Interesting though that the top mares down here in Australia in recent years, Makybe Diva, Typhoon Tracey, Black Caviar, have produced nothing of note. Winx lost her first foal and hasn’t had another go yet….

  6. A few nice races at Salisbury this evening but it’s quite trappy.
I like the look of St Lawrence in the 6.05 at 5/2 with Albasheer the fav having been off for a long time. St Lawrence has also had a smaller break since his dismal run on heavy in May. Back at 6F I can see him being up with the pace or leading and the ground will be more to his liking. (NB)

There is also two J C Roughet 2yos running in France in the 1.25 and 2.00. The double pays 2-1 which isn’t that inspiring but the trainers yard is in Hot form and I’m hoping they continue on their progression.

    Liyann 1.25 + Spanish Baroque 2.00 double 2-1 (NAP)

  7. Flexible Nap: Penywern Taverner 4/1 for Marquand/Haggas. 6.15 Newbury. Plenty of time to see how the market goes on this one or do an ew early. Hugh Taylor has tipped the favourite Croupier so most of the value has gone there.

  8. When you compare the improvement in human athletic performance over the past 70 years or so with thoroughbred horses, there is no comparison. Humans have got bigger, stronger and faster, but horses basically remain the same. Maybe horses have lost their prey feeling. I suggest adding Cheetahs to horse races placed about 50 yards behind the start and released at the same time as the stalls open. I realize there are plenty of issues with this, but it would stop JS from dropping his horses at the back.

Nap is IMRAHOR ew in the 17:45 at Newbury

    1. A while ago you were proposing setting up an alligator racing event over there in FLA. Apparently gators have explosive speed over ten yards (like Shearer in his prime), so they might be interesting over the fast downhill 5f at Epsom. Now it’s cheetahs. We know those guys can motor and have amazing cruising speed. It would be the straight mile at Ascot for them, giving the horses 50 yards. I’d watch that. Anyway, any further Horses v Other Animals formats you think of, you know we are a receptive audience.

      1. That is why those tactics work.
The Cheetahs would outflank the field and bring them all down (I think they would get classed as Fallers) and gorge on Horses and Jockeys alike (maybe not the Jockeys who must need seasoning).
JS would sail through Foinavon style unharmed.
I am mindful that the Horse Barney Rubbles ran at Bellewstown today and for the Barney Rubbles on the Guardian that would be his his worst nightmare.

  11. Troll Peninsula…or the Guardian comments section as it’s now known. JD: JS would need his own special hold-up cheetah dropped in behind the main cheetah… I’m not sure horses would give a monkey’s anyway. Hope you’re not laying down bait to attract a certain splendidly-moustachioed fellow over from Troll Peninsula…
