Talking Horses Tuesday September 7th 2021

David remains in great form landing his 3rd nap of the month in Amalfi Doug at 6 to 5. More power to you, David.

Craig R went EW with Punters Poet who was 3rd at 12/1 advised. Bacciodilupo also had an EW nap on the same horse advised at 14/1 (SP 11/1). Well done, gents. And that’s the Hitlist for yesterday.

The blog’s nap wisely took Monday off on a duvet day: non runner.

If I’ve missed anyone, please give me a shout via the September Winners thread.

The blog’s nap is Just Hubert in the 4.05 Goodwood at 2/1

Many thanks to Newmarket trainer Julia Fielding for allowing me to use the picture she took this morning for the blog header.

As ever, please leave your naps/tips by making a comment below. All welcome, especially newcomers; just enter a name when asked so we know who is who. No prizes, but it’s good fun here among some seasoned punters, most of whom spent years commenting at The Guardian on the original Talking Horses forum, which has now been heavily cut back.

If you tip a winner, please use the Winners thread to highlight your result and we’ll put you on the Hitlist next day. There is a Winners Thread for each month.

What This Blog Is For

As mentioned above this long-running Steeplechasing blog was adapted in a hurry when The Guardian announced they were cutting back on their (usually) daily Talking Horses section. Many punters had gathered there over the years to exchange ideas and fancies. Part of the adapting we had to do at the start of this blog was restricting this daily main article to tips/naps, while we found our feet regarding house rules, moderation and stuff like that.

We are now in a position to open this main daily article to all subjects. It can be very enjoyable when something is latched onto by our knowledgeable, quick-witted posters as they indulge in wordplay and jousting. We still want tips of course, from those who want to tip. It’s by no means an obligation.

If you do post a tip/nap, just include it with whatever subject you are discussing, preferably at the foot of your post. So long as you remember to come back after a winner and put the details of that win in the monthly Winners Thread, then we can include you on the Hitlist in the next day’s main article.

General guidance: No swearing, please. We’re not prudes, it’s just that there is wide scope in the swearword lexicon and we do not have moderators (and hope we’ll never need them). Also, please keep discussions on politics and religion to The Lounge section, though brief references to these subjects in the main article are not forbidden.

Thanks for looking in. If you are betting, especially if you follow our tipsters, good luck with your bets, but please bear in mind that this is meant to be ‘fun’. There are many wise heads posting tips here and we haven’t yet gone a day without somebody tipping a winner. But never bet more than you can afford to lose. Small stakes can still produce wide smiles.

All the best
Joe

  1. Nap- Coley’s Koko, 3.40 Catterick Bridge. 5/1. Tinkler horses seem to be winning…
NB – Sherkin Island for Weld and Keane, 4.30 Galway. 4/1. EW double on these.

    1. Sherkin Bay seems to be a NR now so the same combo’s Haparanda in the 6.30 Galway is the NB, 15/8 . Will double it with Swan Bay for JPOB in the first race there, been heavily-backed at 5/6, market signs not so positive for the AOB pair.

  2. I don’t know why the ‘European Breeders Fund Peter Willett Future Stayers’ Maiden Stakes (GBB Race) (Class 2) ‘ at Goodwood at 14.55 is not abridged.
Why not leave out either EBF or or European Breeders Fund?
    One should.go
Can you be a future staying maiden?
I tried but you always abandon Irish Catholicism when you least expect it.
In that 14.55 race it yields a nice reverse forecast with a Horse called Inverness about 8s who Sue Magnier failed to patent the name and Graffiti trained by Mick Channon at 33s.
I am expecting to do the Channon Windmill Celebration tomorrow.

    1. Not tempted by Catch (Sue being playful) or Sun King (Sue being très historical) tomorrow? Or does Madonna with Seamie ‘the child’ Heffernan on board not appeal? Come , come what do Ballydoyle have to do these days to attract your attention, egs? Anyway, I still think it will be Aidan the one doing the windmill celebrations after the Champion Stakes on Saturday. And he’s supplemented High Definition for the Leger – he truly is a magical warlock of a trainer if he’s found the key to that recalcitrant horse and gets it to pip Hurricane Lane on the line. Hubble bubble….

A lovely few lines. Better than a winner.

  4. EGS, I’m sure you’ll be persuaded to make the trip to Lonchamp this year with the guarantee that there’ll be a Guinness pub (as mentioned in Greg’s report in the Graun. Just heading onto the golf course – Gary Moore’s string seem to be in form so a quick nap for Breezy Storm in the second at Hoodwoos.

    1. Auldchiel,
A rare article by Greg on the Arc where he doesn’t mention the rip-off price. Never does it at Ascot or Epsom or even my local track at Mallow.
It is 5 euros for Arc Trials day on Sunday and 20 for where I will on Arc day.
Curiously he has proved right this year in that I got no refund for my tickets last year and was told they would be honoured this year by notifying an email address. The website still claims this but no reply after 20 messages.
So they are not as desperate for overseas visitors as they claim.
I will just fork out for new tickets

  6. T’is is a lovely photo.

Catch is an unusual horse name – the only thing it reminds me of is a underated Cure song.

September is a month that blessed with related songs, there’s the much loved Earth Wire and Fire tune,
Kurt Weill’s wonderful September Song covered by everyone from Sinatra to Ian McCullough and a grand Americans entry from Lydia Loveless from a year or so ago. Then there’s Green day – who just want it all over.

Horses today – the Goodwood 4.05 looks most interesting race but as thee are a few tips for that already
I’ll skip on to the 4.35 there where Additional can be the nap for O Murphy.

    1. Needs to be a blogpost by itself…songs/album titles Sue Magnier could use (since she’s clearly running out of ideas!) -the only problem being nothing in the pop genre would be ‘highbrow’ enough for her. Cure thoughts: Punchy one-word names seem to be her preference so it would be amusing (and have lots of Racing Post readers spitting out their cornflakes!) if Pornography lined up some time for a Roscommon 7f maiden; ‘Mint Car’ needs to be used by someone; ‘Gone!’ would fit a sprinter -you can imagine the kind of race calls you’d get; Inbetweendays for a handicapper who wins once every few years…speaking of underrated I always think Green Day are by critics, the ‘Andrew Baldwins’ (in case mjw is reading) of the post-grunge punk rock scene, except where they took unsubtle aim at ‘Dubya’ and the ‘Governator’ on American Idiot, of course. Anywhere that’s getting into the realm political so better 🤫

      1. InBetweenDays is a fine horse name. i did have to google this but Andrew Lloyd Webber was at Sue Ms wedding so maybe she likes a Musical . A whole new world opens…Oklahoma , HillsAreAlive,, MyBoyBill – they roll of the tongue and possibly into the trash can but its an idea.

      2. “songs/album titles Sue Magnier could use (since she’s clearly running out of ideas!)” What grounds are there for making that assumption? Do you not think that male owners have run out of ideas?

“Punchy one-word names seem to be her preference so it would be amusing (and have lots of Racing Post readers spitting out their cornflakes!) if Pornography lined up some time for a Roscommon 7f maiden”. Would it be amusing? Perhaps those R Post readers don’t find adolescent jokes funny? Would this type of chat appeal to women who might be on the point of joining this blog?

        1. Lol i don’t want to engage in this kind of nonsense with anonymous people (had enough of that on the Guardian) – suffice to say it’s very sexist to assume that only men use or like pornography. You could ask theactual women on this blog if they were offended by my comment and if 4hey were I shall apologise- again, it is sexist to speak for them instead of letting them have their say. Good day to you, sir. And try to lighten up??

          1. People are just as anonymous here as they were, and are, on the Guardian, Tuna, including you.

You have not answered either of the points I made, I note.

There was no assumption in my post that women may not use or enjoy pornography. I doubt very much that you had these in mind when you wrote your “joke”.

The history of prejudice and sexism shows that those who were its victims were always told to “lighten up”.

I shall not cease to point it out when the culture of this blog makes it unwelcoming to women.

            1. Quai,I think that within the context Rakib used the word, it was not an unreasonable post. Although it’s not a word I’d welcome on a regular basis, I did not get the impression there was any kind of malice aforethought. I know you are both happy to debate matters frankly, and if you want to do that, The Lounge is always open.

              1. On reflection, Quai has a point here. There is no reason I’m aware of that your race or religion would be known to him. Also, calling someone ‘woke’ or making any personal comment never helps in these exchanges. As I have said before, ‘play the ball, not the man’. Will you withdraw this particular post?

                Like

                1. I’ll withdraw it because someone has to be the bigger man here but my name is clearly here, and it’s obviously Muslim so I don’t believe that nonsense. Most people here, including myself are using their real names and it’s absurd to claim that’s not the case. He’s clearly from the outset claimed that I’ve been ‘sexist’ whereas I pointed out the hypocrisy of the allegation and disputed the foundation. I was willing to hear a genuine female voice on the issue but none came forward. In the interest of harmony in willing to forgive and forget.

                  1. Can we all just behave and concentrate on the racing and not the “dissing”. There is room for all races, sexes, persuasions on this blog. But there is no place for vacuous comments. FFS, why introduce pornography to this thread? Good on you for withdrawing Rakib – this is not The Guardian.

                    1. Not to go through it all again, DN, but someone mentioned the pop group the Cure and the P word is the name of one of their early albums. The idea was not to introduce the subject of ‘P’ but merely the word ‘P’ as a possible, unlikely name for a horse. As we’ve seen it would be problematic. The naming of horses, though, should be an allowable topic or we do have problems. Who’s your Arc fancy btw…

            3. Quai, if you wish to respond to Rakib’s 6.18pm post here, then I think both parties have been fairly served on the main thread and beyond that, take it to The Lounge if you both must, although I’d much sooner see an ‘agree to disagree post’ from both parties here (my tolerance for conflict is very low; if there’s too much of it I find myself withdrawing).

              1. I can’t agree. Tuna has accused me of harassment and racism on no credible basis. That is a very serious allegation. I have no idea of Tuna’s race or religion, nor he mine.

I would expect to see that post removed. Were it stated against my real name it would certainly be actionable.

The matter of his sexist humour is a minor issue.
