Talking Horses Saturday September 18th 2021

Shock! Horror! It seems the blog was the only one to nap a winner today in the shape of Call Me Ginger (4/1 SP) advised at 11/2. Well done me. Good to see you back on the Hitlist!

Alan once more makes a profit with his EW nap Bimble, second at 18/1. Astonishing consistency with these, Alan. Very well done.

Rob J also went close with an EW selection in River Nymph placed at 16/1. Nice work, Rob.

If I’ve missed anyone, please give me a shout via the September Winners thread.

The blog’s nap for Saturday is in the 3.25 Newbury – King Of Clubs, 11/2 (BOG)

NB, I am away over the weekend. I will schedule a post in advance to ensure Sunday’s blog is available, though it will be minus a Hitlist for Saturday. There will be a double Hitlist on Monday.

As ever, please leave your naps/tips by making a comment below. All welcome, especially newcomers; just enter a name when asked so we know who is who. No prizes, but it’s good fun here among some seasoned punters, most of whom spent years commenting at The Guardian on the original Talking Horses forum, which has now been heavily cut back.

If you tip a winner, please use the Winners thread to highlight your result and we’ll put you on the Hitlist next day. There is a Winners Thread for each month.

What This Blog Is For

As mentioned above this long-running Steeplechasing blog was adapted in a hurry when The Guardian announced they were cutting back on their (usually) daily Talking Horses section. Many punters had gathered there over the years to exchange ideas and fancies. Part of the adapting we had to do at the start of this blog was restricting this daily main article to tips/naps, while we found our feet regarding house rules, moderation and stuff like that.

We are now in a position to open this main daily article to all subjects. It can be very enjoyable when something is latched onto by our knowledgeable, quick-witted posters as they indulge in wordplay and jousting. We still want tips of course, from those who want to tip. It’s by no means an obligation.

If you do post a tip/nap, just include it with whatever subject you are discussing, preferably at the foot of your post. So long as you remember to come back after a winner and put the details of that win in the monthly Winners Thread, then we can include you on the Hitlist in the next day’s main article.

General guidance: No swearing, please. We’re not prudes, it’s just that there is wide scope in the swearword lexicon and we do not have moderators (and hope we’ll never need them). Also, please keep discussions on politics and religion to The Lounge section, though brief references to these subjects in the main article are not forbidden.

Thanks for looking in. If you are betting, especially if you follow our tipsters, good luck with your bets, but please bear in mind that this is meant to be ‘fun’. There are many wise heads posting tips here and we haven’t yet gone a day without somebody tipping a winner. But never bet more than you can afford to lose. Small stakes can still produce wide smiles.

All the best
Joe

Any post drawn to my attention that I deem unsuitable will be deleted or edited, depending on the content.

Ask a dozen individuals what they deem suitable for anything and you’ll probably get 12 different answers. So, decisions will be made on my judgement. In the altered post, I will explain my reasons for adjusting/deleting a post and there will be no appeal, unless I have made a blunder (not impossible).

I do not always have the time to read every post, so, if you believe a post needs moderated, please use the ‘contact me‘ form.

  2. Totally agree with Simon. Thanks for all your work Joe and let’s keep the future clean for this good Scot.

The nap for tomorrow is NO BET. Bookies benefit weekend. Show restraint.

  3. However, may I point out that my horse ARE WE NORTHERN runs in the 11.35 at Dax tomorrow. In need of the run and missing a piece of work. It’ll end in tears, but I’m happy to support.

Actions over words and bear that it mind people when you comment. This blog is a great success and the syndicate that it has created is most thankful.

Well played, Joe, should be the start of a great run hopefully!
Saturday Nap: Fivethousandtoone in the Ayr Gold Cup (3.40) 16/1, e/w. Gazillion places. Will undoubtedly miss out by one so pick your favourite horse instead. NB: Dhabab (4.00 Newbury) 15/8, win. No weird replies please.

  7. Great to hear there is a far away World where both single and double Hitlists exist.
In my limited Universe I am napping Bielsa for the Ayr GC at 15.40.
The Human counterpart likes to watch Leeds Football Team from a squatting no.2 position.
I am expecting a bit different from the Equine version tomorrow.

  9. Going for a Saturday EW Trixie –

    Newbury 1.40 – Spanish Star 8-1
    Ayr 4.15 – Dance fever 4-1 Nap
    Ayr 4.50 – Titan Rock 8-1 NB

In the big sprints I may have a quid or 2 ew on a few but much like Friday it’s a total minefield.

Ayr gold cup picks are –
    Volatile Analyst EW 25-1
    Fivethousandtoone EW 16-1

    Good luck folks

  10. Just had a call from a friend who flew into JFK from Heathrow this evening. Frank was sitting at the back of the plane for the whole journey and never once moved. Just before landing Frank bolted down the isle, An eagle eyed flight attendant spotted him and blocked him from further progress with the food trolley/cart.

Nap is YIBIR at Belmont Park at around 22;45 (I think)

  11. Morning all,

A busy day of racing ahead, so trying to keep within my means. Easy to try and back too many horses on a day like today.

    E/W Single – Midwinster 2.30 Ayr
Lucky 15 – Ayr 3.40 Ostillio, Newmarket 2.40 World Of Windhover, 3.50 Jewel In My Crown, Wolverhampton 4.55 Thaki
The following in singles/doubles/trebles – whatever the price dictates:
    Bet 1 – Newmarket 1.00 Mystic Wells, 2.05 Sir Maxi, 3.50 Widaad
Bet 2 – Ayr 3.05 Hellomydarlin, Catterick 2.25 My Little Tip, Wolverhampton 5.30 Regal Rhapsody

That should keep me occupied across the day and hopefully provide a winner or two.

Good luck to everyone with their bets and add my words of thanks to Joe for his steady hand on the tiller and a thumbs up for his NAP yesterday

    1. You’re right David. I was waiting on the results of the stewards inquiry after the race (how frequent are these now and for such trivial matters…) and then forgot about it. Looks like my good form has ended alas. Wagyu was my saver though… what an astonishing year that horse has had.

  16. As there will be a double Hitlist over the weekend and I believe no new blog and I can’t see anything to back tomorrow I think I can count Belmont tonight for my Sunday nap.
An e.w double on Harjuka trainer by Fabre at 22.14 (7/2) and Bolshoi Balllet in the 22.45 (6/4).
If they both are placed in weaker fields than they are used to your stake should return.
If they both win those odds add up more than you think.

  17. Well done EGS and Mikle nice selections. EGS Bielsa really done that his own way!

Those huge sprint handicaps at Ayr (or in general) are a minefield. Think il be steering clear full stop.
Stick to the races where there is less runners and decent EW place ratio/offers.

  18. The Steelman,
Bielsa is one of those Horses I have backed before without any back-up Science just to have a betting interest.
He needs a lot to go right and I had no more reason to believe that would be today anymore than previously.
At least I never need to have a bet ever again in the AGC as I now have my lifetime winner of that Race.
Now to crack on and get the Wokingham and Lincoln out of my system.

    1. Another 57 points for Bolshoi Ballet at Belmont for me that takes me up to 172 for September. That break’s Jonathan’s August record.
