Talking Horses Saturday 25th September 2021

Unless someone has yet to post on the Winners Thread it looks like the Hitlist is redundant for the first time since the blog started 😦

My Saturday nap is one that looks really good value – Baltic Baron in the Cambridgeshire (3.40). It’s a long time since he’s won, but he’s not been in bad form this season and has run some decent times. He’ll get the strong pace he needs and this trip could be spot on for him. I’ve backed him EW to 6 places with Bet365 at 190/1 – 200/1 is available to 5 places.

As ever, please leave your naps/tips by making a comment below. All welcome, especially newcomers; just enter a name when asked so we know who is who. No prizes, but it’s good fun here among some seasoned punters, most of whom spent years commenting at The Guardian on the original Talking Horses forum, which has now been heavily cut back.

If you tip a winner, please use the Winners thread to highlight your result and we’ll put you on the Hitlist next day. There is a Winners Thread for each month.

What This Blog Is For

As mentioned above this long-running Steeplechasing blog was adapted in a hurry when The Guardian announced they were cutting back on their (usually) daily Talking Horses section. Many punters had gathered there over the years to exchange ideas and fancies. Part of the adapting we had to do at the start of this blog was restricting this daily main article to tips/naps, while we found our feet regarding house rules, moderation and stuff like that.

We are now in a position to open this main daily article to all subjects. It can be very enjoyable when something is latched onto by our knowledgeable, quick-witted posters as they indulge in wordplay and jousting. We still want tips of course, from those who want to tip. It’s by no means an obligation.

If you do post a tip/nap, just include it with whatever subject you are discussing, preferably at the foot of your post. So long as you remember to come back after a winner and put the details of that win in the monthly Winners Thread, then we can include you on the Hitlist in the next day’s main article.

General guidance: No swearing, please. We’re not prudes, it’s just that there is wide scope in the swearword lexicon and we do not have moderators (and hope we’ll never need them). Also, please keep discussions on politics and religion to The Lounge section, though brief references to these subjects in the main article are not forbidden.

Thanks for looking in. If you are betting, especially if you follow our tipsters, good luck with your bets, but please bear in mind that this is meant to be ‘fun’. There are many wise heads posting tips here and we haven’t yet gone a day without somebody tipping a winner. But never bet more than you can afford to lose. Small stakes can still produce wide smiles.

All the best
Joe

Moderator Rules

Any post drawn to my attention that I deem unsuitable will be deleted or edited, depending on the content.

Ask a dozen individuals what they deem suitable for anything and you’ll probably get 12 different answers. So, decisions will be made on my judgement. In the altered post, I will explain my reasons for adjusting/deleting a post and there will be no appeal, unless I have made a blunder (not impossible).

I do not always have the time to read every post, so, if you believe a post needs moderated, please use the ‘contact me‘ form.

Many thanks.

    1. I see that Ian Williams has 10 runners today…conundrum…will take a chance on Oneforthegutter 13:50 Newmarket EW 12/1…hoping it does a bit better than yesterday’s tip which finished 11th out of 12 runners

  2. Breath Caught in the Cambridgeshire for me. I dont like the draw, but course winner, has won off an identical break before and surely laid out for the race. 40-1 each way will do.

  3. Joe might want to bump up this entry btw .. it’s halfway down the page again. A bit confused by the plunge this morning on Anmaat (still my nb) – very positive trainer comments on Wednesday should have led to a shortening then but even 10s was available even yesterday with my bookie. At 9/2 now the thinking must be ‘group horse in a handicap’ – hope so for anyone latching on now because it’s probably not ‘value’ as an ew saver now – you’d have 5o think Frankie’s mount Magical Morning at 7s fits that bill more. Anyway, best of luck whatever you choose, everyone! Other horses I’ll be watching closely -Chiricahua (ex Ger Lyons) -a old fave of mine, and Slowhand’s- on his hurdling debut on yet another day at Listowel (1.10). Day 5 i make that …crikey and I thought the Leger meeting went on a bit…and Suain Na Draoicht in the concluding bumper so I can find out how to pronounce it. 10/11 and 3/1 respectively so probably a cheeky double. Looking forward most to Sacred Bridge at HQ tho…I think 6f is more her trip than her main rivals. Flotus might be the bigger threat.

  4. i think Joe through a spanner in the works for tipsters with his picture competion so we shouldnt count yesterday as a fallow day. i think someone mentioned USA to win ryder cup ( What a spectacular course!!) so that counts. Tip to follow after these excuses :-).

    1. More spectacular than the current odds, D, ..1/10 for the US to win which makes the 8/13 you could get throughout the summer seem amazing value! They always had the better players but even the egos are being left at the door so they’re unbeatable. I think the only Ryder Cup bet is how big the margin is going to be – 14s and 25s for them to win 19-9 or 20-8 respectively- worth a tenner each.

  5. i’m day drinking today so will bet a few horses with friends, we take shots each at picking. Could literally be on anything!

for me its an animal theme with Go bears Go in the 3.00 , and Fantastic Fox in the3.40 as the nap and EW NB respectively at HQ.

    Good luck all.

  6. Never having been to Newmarket it was not until the 13:50 that I realised the possible effect of the hill at the finish . One for the notebook
