Talking Horses Monday October 18th 2021

Mickle begins a new Hitlist week the way he ended last week, with a winning nap in Mercian Prince at 13/8. Well done. And Alan’s EW nap Elysium was a cracking selection winning at 9/1. Fine work, Alan.

If I’ve missed anyone, please give me a shout via the Winners thread. (And another reminder to please state if your selection was your nap or not).

The blog’s nap was 3rd at 14/1. Monday’s nap is Royaume Uni in the 4.15 Plumpton at 11/10 BOG.

As ever, please leave your naps/tips by making a comment below. All welcome, especially newcomers; just enter a name when asked so we know who is who. No prizes, but it’s good fun here among some seasoned punters, most of whom spent years commenting at The Guardian on the original Talking Horses forum, which has now been heavily cut back.

If you tip a winner, please use the Winners thread to highlight your result and we’ll put you on the Hitlist next day. There is a Winners Thread for each month.

What This Blog Is For

As mentioned above this long-running Steeplechasing blog was adapted in a hurry when The Guardian announced they were cutting back on their (usually) daily Talking Horses section. Many punters had gathered there over the years to exchange ideas and fancies. Part of the adapting we had to do at the start of this blog was restricting this daily main article to tips/naps, while we found our feet regarding house rules, moderation and stuff like that.

We are now in a position to open this main daily article to all subjects. It can be very enjoyable when something is latched onto by our knowledgeable, quick-witted posters as they indulge in wordplay and jousting. We still want tips of course, from those who want to tip. It’s by no means an obligation.

If you do post a tip/nap, just include it with whatever subject you are discussing, preferably at the foot of your post. So long as you remember to come back after a winner and put the details of that win in the monthly Winners Thread, then we can include you on the Hitlist in the next day’s main article.

General guidance: No swearing, please. We’re not prudes, it’s just that there is wide scope in the swearword lexicon and we do not have moderators (and hope we’ll never need them). Also, please keep discussions on politics and religion to The Lounge section, though brief references to these subjects in the main article are not forbidden.

Thanks for looking in. If you are betting, especially if you follow our tipsters, good luck with your bets, but please bear in mind that this is meant to be ‘fun’. There are many wise heads posting tips here and we haven’t yet gone a day without somebody tipping a winner. But never bet more than you can afford to lose. Small stakes can still produce wide smiles.

All the best

  1. Cruel. Joe knows Royaume Uni is a half brother to my losing nap in the Fillies Mile and also the more successful Novellist. The Dam is Night Lagoon.
You can guess the Breeder of Royaume Uni.
Maybe Plumpton is the future of that Breeding Operation.

  2. Nap: WESTOVER 11/10 2.20. Ponte*
NB: DUNUM 11/4 4.22 Gowran Pk.

*might be worth taking up the 6/1 Paddy’s are offering for this and another Juddmonte horse, Fine Lace, who debuts at Gowran Park precisely 18 minutes earlier with the supercharged Colin Keane on board for Dermot Weld.

  3. Just a heads up for those who like a fun bet….. Magical Dragon is out tomorrow at Bath 16:30 Sky 17/2 5 plcs …has to be worth a nibble….Just saying

  4. Out of interest I have done a fun £1 accy on the shorties mentioned above…Westover..Dunum…Royaume and Fine lace….pays about £60……now …..who’s goona let me down??????

    1. Fair warning, Al: Dunum has a string of twos so he’s not absolute nailed-on certainty to bring home the acca, but he does give you a run for your money if it’s got that far! Up to 5 places too that race so well worth monitoring the betting through the afternoon to see what the best e/w angle is … Could be Keane on an Aga Khan horse, a Noel Meade runner that’s been better over hurdles or something crazy with a ton of zeroes. Will post my own fanciful lucky 15 with it… probably including the 🐉 you so thoughtfully mentioned!

      1. Ok, my very small stakes ew lucky 15: Coronation Cottage, 11s, Bath 1.00
        Astrophysicist, 9s G Pk 4.22
        Magical Dragon, 7s, Bath 4.30
        All The Mollies, 18s, G.Pk 4.55 (6 places)

  5. Sergeant in the Plum 3.05 has done a few good turns in past and while its short it was ridden with such confidence last time i’m hoping the weight wont stop it today. Most of the obvious looking horses are short today.

  6. After a wee break in the Highlands, hopefully my now rested brain can pick out some winners again. Have to agree with rakib and say Westover (ponty, 14:20) nap (sorry rakib…)

    1. No apologies necessary, Rob. It should bolt up let’s be fair. Especially since Grenoble who really ‘could be anything’ -and was tipped by the red-hot ‘Newmarket’ in the Post – got taken out…that was my prime fear last night.

    2. Hmm I’m going to say the double napping clearly put too much pressure on Ryan Moore’s shoulders there. Seemed like Westy was being bumped by the horse in yellow for the first half of the race. Then SDS is always tough to beat in a tight finish…

  7. My Nap is in the “Get Out of Penury Handicap” at Wolverhampton. ARADENA is the name of the unfortunate horse to save the day. (Odds around 3/1).

Even though Magic Dragon is in EGS’s losing sequence (#7 I think) of dragons I will place a small ew bet on him.
