Horsetalk Monday November 1st 2021

Saying goodbye to October, let’s catch up on the Hitlist. The Steelman had a Saturday winner at a good price – Haafapiece, advised 11/2, SP 15/2. Nice work, Steelman.

Mickle and EGS had strong finishes this last week with Mickle giving his 3rd winning nap in four days – Fiddleronthe roof at 7/2. well done, Mickle.

EGS went overseas to land his third nap in three days with Burgoo Alley, advised at 11/2, SP 4/1. Working into fine form for November, EGS.

Rakib, who has rarely been off the list for more than 3 or 4 days napped Uno Was, a 4/5 winner.

Well done to all who decided to go public in this section with their thoughts and tips. Feel free to carry on commenting and tipping in this, the daily thread, but, for naps only, there is a new section: please read the ‘rules’ at the top of that section and include your naps there. Any other tips or thoughts, keep them for the daily thread.

If I’ve missed anyone, please give me a shout via the Winners thread.

The blog’s nap Ahoy Senor slipped up late when just trying to come back at them at Carlisle. He looks set for a cracking season, assuming he is sound. Monday’s nap can be found in the new Post Your Daily Naps thread.

As ever, please leave your naps/tips by making a comment below. All welcome, especially newcomers; just enter a name when asked so we know who is who. No prizes, but it’s good fun here among some seasoned punters, most of whom spent years commenting at The Guardian on the original Talking Horses forum, which has now been heavily cut back.

If you tip a winner, please use the Winners thread to highlight your result and we’ll put you on the Hitlist next day. There is a Winners Thread for each month.

What This Blog Is For

As mentioned above this long-running Steeplechasing blog was adapted in a hurry when The Guardian announced they were cutting back on their (usually) daily Talking Horses section. Many punters had gathered there over the years to exchange ideas and fancies. Part of the adapting we had to do at the start of this blog was restricting this daily main article to tips/naps, while we found our feet regarding house rules, moderation and stuff like that.

We are now in a position to open this main daily article to all subjects. It can be very enjoyable when something is latched onto by our knowledgeable, quick-witted posters as they indulge in wordplay and jousting. We still want tips of course, from those who want to tip. It’s by no means an obligation.

If you do post a tip/nap, just include it with whatever subject you are discussing, preferably at the foot of your post. So long as you remember to come back after a winner and put the details of that win in the monthly Winners Thread, then we can include you on the Hitlist in the next day’s main article.

General guidance: No swearing, please. We’re not prudes, it’s just that there is wide scope in the swearword lexicon and we do not have moderators (and hope we’ll never need them). Also, please keep discussions on politics and religion to The Lounge section, though brief references to these subjects in the main article are not forbidden.

Thanks for looking in. If you are betting, especially if you follow our tipsters, good luck with your bets, but please bear in mind that this is meant to be ‘fun’. There are many wise heads posting tips here and we haven’t yet gone a day without somebody tipping a winner. But never bet more than you can afford to lose. Small stakes can still produce wide smiles.

All the best

  1. David spotted Peltwell first and napped it (3.25 Hereford) – seems the most obvious winner so I’ll also tip it here, 9/4. The winning streak has to come to an end, not sure it’s today though. Only comment here – I guess it’s going to take time before we all get used to the dual thread thing!

  2. Yeah – Hopefully this thread doesn’t get a bit orphaned a la the lounge but there are various posters who add extra tips during day so hopefully not!

    1. Yup, I guess this can be the surrogate daily lounge- or an ‘ante-room’ perhaps. I need to make up for my nap unseating anyways… Great way to start the competition 🙄 it wasn’t even a jumps race!

  3. It was sad to hear that Vindication has been retired,I enjoyed watching him race but if his back is not right it is the only thing to do.

  4. I was looking through the Melbourne Cup card this morning – a very different look to it this year with just two runners from trainers this side of the world (a few others that are now trained in Oz). Not quite sure what to make of the hiccups in Spanish Mission’s preparation.. missed the prep run after swelling in joint, and been scrutinized closely by vets over there. At a fairly short price, decided it was not a bet for me. Incentivise is a worthy favourite, but not appealing to me – I know plenty have won it, having not raced the distance before, but other factors put me off betting at a short price.
I’ve had plenty of success in the past though, so kept looking for bigger prices to hopefully get in the top six – one of those was Selino which I’ve backed at 45-1 six places; it has twice finished 3 lengths behind Spanish Mission on level weights, and is now carrying 8 pounds less, seemed worth a little punt at six times the price! (It’s been the target since April I believe.) I won’t mention the other two at about 20-1, because just about every horse i mention on here runs badly at the moment!!

  5. Quick question – if I post an EW NAP, is it standard EW places, or will it go by Betfair enhanced places?
(Thinking about shooting for the moon tomorrow!) Will also post on other thread. Thanks

  6. Hi Luke, I’d sooner stick to standard place rules a la Tattersalls. Otherwise I need to start checking place offers, non runners affecting it, etc. Doubtless some will suffer because of this, but I think it will even out in the end.
